Is the Mpox outbreak another health emergency?


The World Health Organization declared Mpox a public health emergency for international concern (PHEIC) considering the upsurge of cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the neighbouring 13 African countries. The African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the number of pox cases and deaths is 160% and 19% consecutively higher than those in the same period in 2023. Mpox has reached to the other African countries like Kenya, and Rwanda which were previously unaffected. The most affected countries in the world are the United States of America, Brazil, Spain, France, Colombia, Mexico, The United Kingdom, Peru, Germany, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Asia, recently Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines have reported Mpox cases.  In India, the latest case was detected in March 2024, with overall of 30 cases reported since the 2022 declaration of the disease.
